What is TENCEL™ Lyocell?

TENCEL™ Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from wood, sourced from certified or controlled forests. The raw material typically comes from trees such as eucalyptus, beech, or spruce.

Unlike synthetic fibers derived from fossil fuels, TENCEL™ Lyocell is made from a renewable natural resource. The cellulose extracted from wood is dissolved and then regenerated into smooth, high-performance textile fibers.

The result is a fabric that combines a natural origin with exceptional performance.

How is it made?

The production process begins by converting wood into dissolving pulp, a highly purified form of cellulose.

This pulp is then dissolved using an organic solvent called N-Methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO). The dissolved cellulose is spun into fibers, washed, dried, and transformed into yarn.

One of the defining features of TENCEL™ Lyocell is its closed-loop manufacturing process. More than 99.8% of the solvent is recovered, purified, and reused, significantly reducing waste and minimizing the need for new chemicals.

Compared to conventional viscose production, the process is simpler and requires fewer chemicals.

Naturally soft

TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers have an exceptionally smooth surface, giving fabrics a naturally soft feel that remains comfortable against the skin throughout the day.

Excellent moisture management

The fiber structure efficiently absorbs and releases moisture, helping create a drier microclimate next to the skin. This contributes to greater comfort, particularly in warm weather or during extended wear.

Helps reduce odor

Because moisture is absorbed into the fiber rather than remaining on its surface, the fabric creates a less favorable environment for odor-causing bacteria.

Is TENCEL™ Lyocell more sustainable?

No textile fiber is completely without environmental impact. However, TENCEL™ Lyocell is designed to reduce that impact through responsible sourcing and resource-efficient manufacturing.

According to Lenzing, TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are produced with:

At least 50% lower carbon emissions and water consumption compared to generic lyocell (based on Higg MSI).
A closed-loop production process that recovers more than 99.8% of the solvent used during manufacturing.
Wood sourced from certified (FSC® or PEFC) or controlled sources.
EU Ecolabel certification, recognizing reduced environmental impact across multiple stages of the product life cycle.

Is it biodegradable?

Yes.

Standard TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are certified as biodegradable and compostable in soil, freshwater, marine environments, and both home and industrial composting conditions.

It's worth noting that the biodegradability of a finished garment also depends on other components, such as dyes, trims, or additional materials.

How can you verify it's genuine?

Authentic TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers contain a molecular marker that enables traceability and verification throughout the supply chain. This technology helps confirm that the fibers genuinely originate from Lenzing.
