You wash your lyocell dress once and suddenly it feels slightly different. Did it shrink, or is something else happening to the fabric?

Lyocell is known for its softness, fluid drape and comfort. But what actually happens when it meets water, heat and a washing machine?

Can lyocell shrink? Yes, it can. But there isn't one simple percentage that applies to every garment.

How much a garment changes depends not only on the fiber, but also on how the fabric is constructed, finished, washed and dried.

So before you wash your 100% lyocell clothing, here's what you should know about shrinkage, washing temperatures, tumble drying and keeping the fabric in good condition.

Does Lyocell Shrink?

Yes, lyocell can experience dimensional change when washed.

Lyocell is a regenerated cellulosic fiber. Like other textiles, the finished fabric can respond to moisture, heat and mechanical movement during washing and drying.

However, this doesn't mean that every lyocell garment will shrink by the same amount.

Fabric construction, yarn structure, finishing and laundering conditions all influence how the finished textile behaves.

This is why claims such as "lyocell always shrinks by X%" should be treated carefully.

Lyocell can be used to create very different fabrics, from lightweight knits to heavier woven twills. They won't necessarily behave in the same way.

Does 100% Lyocell Shrink?

Yes. A fabric made from 100% lyocell can still experience dimensional change.

The absence of another fiber doesn't make the fabric shrink proof.

Fiber composition is only one part of a textile. The yarn, weave or knit, finishing and garment construction can all influence what happens when it is washed.

The fabric used for our Silent Peaks collection is a woven twill made from 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell with a weight of 213 g/m².

Its technical specifications allow for dimensional change after washing.

This is why we follow the care recommendations for our specific fabric rather than assuming that every 100% lyocell garment should be treated in exactly the same way.

Why Can Lyocell Change Size?

A textile goes through many stages before it becomes a finished garment.

Fibers are spun into yarn. Yarns are woven or knitted into fabric. The fabric may then be dyed, washed and finished before being cut and sewn into clothing.

These processes influence the structure and stability of the finished textile.

When the fabric is later exposed to water, heat and mechanical movement, its dimensions can change.

This is why two garments with 100% lyocell on their composition labels may behave differently in the wash.

Does Lyocell Shrink in the Washing Machine?

It can experience dimensional change during machine washing, but the washing machine itself isn't the only factor.

Temperature, mechanical action and the specific fabric all matter.

For example, the manufacturer of the TENCEL™ Lyocell twill used for Silent Peaks recommends washing at a maximum of 30°C on a delicate cycle.

That doesn't mean every lyocell garment requires exactly the same treatment.

If your garment says 30°C, don't assume that 40°C will be fine simply because another lyocell garment can tolerate it.

The safest approach is simple:

Follow the care label attached to your garment.

Does Lyocell Shrink in the Dryer?

This is where you should be particularly careful.

Heat and mechanical tumbling can expose clothing to additional stress, and some lyocell fabrics aren't intended for tumble drying.

For the fabric used in Silent Peaks, the manufacturer's instructions specifically state do not tumble dry.

If the care label on your lyocell garment prohibits tumble drying, air dry it instead.

Don't assume that all lyocell fabrics respond to a dryer in exactly the same way.

What Temperature Should You Wash Lyocell At?

There isn't one washing temperature that applies to every lyocell garment.

Always check the care label first.

For the fabric used in Silent Peaks, the manufacturer's recommendation is a maximum washing temperature of 30°C on a delicate cycle.

Different lyocell fabrics may have different constructions, finishes and care requirements, so this shouldn't be interpreted as a universal rule for every lyocell or TENCEL™ Lyocell garment.

How to Wash Lyocell Clothing

The most important rule is simple: start with the care label.

When machine washing is permitted, keep these principles in mind:

1. Use the recommended temperature.
Don't increase the temperature simply because another lyocell garment can tolerate it.

2. Choose the recommended wash cycle.
If the label specifies a delicate cycle, use one.

3. Avoid unnecessary mechanical stress.
Aggressive washing can put additional stress on the fabric.

4. Don't overload the washing machine.
Giving garments enough room can help reduce unnecessary friction and creasing.

5. Use an appropriate amount of detergent.
More detergent doesn't necessarily mean cleaner clothing.

6. Pay attention to drying instructions.
Correct washing followed by an unsuitable drying method can still affect the garment.

A general online guide should never override the instructions provided for the specific garment you own.

How Should You Dry Lyocell?

Again, this depends on the garment.

For Silent Peaks, the fabric manufacturer recommends drying flat and avoiding tumble drying.

When drying flat, gently return the garment to its natural shape. Don't aggressively stretch it.

Avoid wringing or twisting wet lyocell clothing when the care instructions advise against it.

The goal is to let the garment dry naturally while maintaining its shape.

Can You Iron Lyocell?

Many lyocell garments can be ironed, but the permitted temperature depends on the specific fabric.

For the fabric used in Silent Peaks, the manufacturer allows ironing at a maximum temperature of 150°C.

Always check your garment's care label before choosing an iron setting.

Using more heat than necessary isn't better for the fabric.

Can You Prevent Lyocell From Shrinking?

You cannot guarantee that a textile will never experience any dimensional change.

What you can do is avoid exposing it to conditions outside those recommended by the manufacturer.

Pay particular attention to:

washing temperature
wash cycle
drying method
ironing temperature
the individual care instructions

It's also important to understand that dimensional change isn't necessarily the same as permanent shrinkage.

Technical specifications can measure changes in both the length and width of a fabric after washing or other treatments.

Rather than thinking of lyocell as either "shrinking" or "not shrinking," it is more accurate to recognize that the stability of the finished fabric depends on how it was made and how it is cared for.

Can You Fix Lyocell That Has Shrunk?

Be careful with online advice promising to "unshrink" clothing.

You may find recommendations involving soaking, stretching, hair conditioner or other home treatments.

These methods aren't guaranteed to be appropriate for every lyocell fabric.

Whether a garment can return to its previous dimensions depends on why the change occurred and how the fabric was constructed and finished.

Aggressively stretching a wet garment may simply distort its proportions.

For a valuable garment that has changed significantly, professional textile care advice may be safer than experimenting with treatments that aren't recommended by its manufacturer.

Does TENCEL™ Lyocell Shrink?

Yes, TENCEL™ Lyocell can also experience dimensional change in a finished fabric.

TENCEL™ Lyocell is still lyocell.

Lyocell is the generic fiber category, while TENCEL™ is Lenzing's trademarked brand for textile fibers. Lenzing's TENCEL™ portfolio includes TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers.

The use of TENCEL™ Lyocell doesn't make a finished garment automatically shrink proof. The fiber can be transformed into many different yarns and fabrics with different constructions and finishes.

So when you see 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell on a composition label, don't use the fiber name as a substitute for the garment's care instructions.

Why the Care Label Matters

One of the biggest mistakes when caring for clothing is making decisions based only on fiber composition.

Seeing 100% cotton, 100% wool or 100% lyocell doesn't give you complete care instructions.

The same fiber can be used to create very different textiles.

A lightweight lyocell jersey and a woven lyocell twill, for example, may have different constructions, finishes and care requirements.

The composition label tells you what the garment is made from.

The care label tells you how that particular garment should be treated.

You need both.

How We Care for TENCEL™ Lyocell at NICOLA MACKOVA
